ALL ABOUT POUTAMA

S.D.L (Student Directed Learning)
Dear Parents,
SDL is a way for us to encourage students to direct their own learning. Students learn self-management, time management and they learn to prioritise their tasks based on importance and what is easy for them. For us in Poutama the main idea behind SDL is about students making good choices. Students are to choose which task they complete from a range of personalised, levelled tasks.
Students are grouped by their reading level and have grids of ‘must do’ and ‘can do’ activities organised by their reading teacher. These reading tasks, alongside a range of other tasks, targeted at their ability level, are their independent learning tasks.
These tasks are in various domains including, but not limited to; reading, visual language, maths, technology, spelling and vocabulary.

PIN WALL

March 2016
Dear Parents,
In Poutama, students are learning to become competent self-managers and independent problem solvers. One way that we help guide our students to becoming experts in these areas is through our “ Pin Wall ”. In Poutama,  students are awarded pins in a range of areas to do with various aspects of school life. Including, but not limited to; Responsibility, Workshop, Space and Learning. Students become experts in these zones and move up the ‘Levels of Independence’. Ask your child or come in and see our wall to read more about the different zones.
Kind regards,
Poutama Teachers

QUIDDAGE

March 2016
Dear Parents,
This year your child will be managing a business in class called Quiddage, it is our Financial Literacy focus. The process involves establishing a business, selling a product, advertising and trading. We will inform parents and students when our Quiddage market days will be running well in advance.
Your child earn snidges (school currency) over the year and will form a business with other members of Poutama. In class we will go over rules, criteria and a sales sheet to make it a fair trading environment. There is a tax to stop children selling products high in added sugar / fat and a rebate for businesses that sell home-made recycled products. We have established that a maximum of $5 can be spent per Quiddage. This is a chance for the children to reuse and roll over a recycled product every second week. This can be done by using a creative way of designing a product eg arts and crafts, using local fruit and vege and designing an activity or game.

Our aim is to be creative and smart with the way we run a business. Please discuss ideas with your child (and their business partners) to support them to understand this process.

Kind regards,

Poutama Teachers
